peace rides a donkey

this week, as we're thinking about Palm Sunday and Holy Week, the image of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on a donkey continues to move me. many of us are aware that what happens on Palm Sunday echoes a vision of the OT prophet Zechariah:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
Just and having salvation,
Gentle and riding on a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
And the war-horses from Jerusalem
And the battle-bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea.
[Zechariah 9]

no doubt this image was in Jesus' mind as he arranged for a donkey to be his transport into jerusalem. it's not through war-horses and chariots that the kingdom comes. instead, it comes through a poor man on a donkey surrounded by hopeful people filled with simple hope. it comes through a shift within us toward justice and salvation, humility and gentleness, reconciliation and peace.
